What do you get when you combine opulent wooden furniture, an enchanted book case, elevated ceilings, erudite service, plush greenery, the most decadent food and a loft-style private dining area? In one word? Mondiall. That’s what you get.
I was smitten from the very second I caught sight of this magnificent eatery. Little did I know that the best was yet to come…
So let me cut to the chase then, and spare you the boring details of how I got there. Upon my arrival at Mondiall, I was greeted by a sprightly man named Gabriel, who led me to a table outside. My attentive waiter, Brian, then joined me to enquire if I would like anything to drink while I was waiting. I became extremely anxious at this point, because sometimes restaurants that display such grandeur can disappoint when it comes to the food. This was indeed not the case with Mondiall. I’m sure you have probably visited the highly popular eatery, but if you haven’t – seriously why haven’t you?!
It was at this point that I looked up to survey the restaurant in its entirety. I immediately realised why Gabriel was so happy for me to be seated at that particular table. You see, sometimes a food critic can be too critical, and their words become lost in the translation of the pedantic thoughts that pop up in their heads. I didn’t have such a problem in what to say about Mondiall. Looking up, everything was just so serene and clear to me. Honestly, the view of Table Mountain from Mondiall is just breathtaking! Literally. If you’re not hungry, I strongly suggest that you pay the eatery a visit anyway – just so that you can get lost in the beauty of Cape Town and its gorgeous waterfront!
The menu is a combination of sumptuous and ‘light-on-the-palate’ meals. You can even order a few easy-going old favourites, like Mondiall’s famous wagyu beef burgers, or their signature fish tacos. Don’t expect diner-style meals, though. These dishes arrive at your table both tastefully plated, and ready to cull a culinary snob’s appetite!
My recommendations from the Mondiall menu: –
Mondiall’s signature fish tacos with chipotle mayo, pico de gallo & coriander.
It felt vibrant and summery. The fish was spiced in a delicious seasoning that left me wanting more. I can honestly see why these tacos remain on the menu after three years strong!
Smoked goat’s cheese parcel.
A mouth-watering marriage of sweet and salty, this was my ideal balance in tastes. Goat’s cheese, roasted root vegetables and caramelised onion? Yes, please and thank you!
Pasta of the day: Creamy risotto with mushroom & spinach.
This dish would’ve done well to rather be named the ‘favourite’ of the day. In fact, it’s the reason why friend became foe as me and my company battled it out to eat the most we possibly could have! It was incredibly luxurious and hearty. Hopefully, it will be on the menu when we return.
Grilled prawns with a chef’s salad, milho fritos and peri-peri sauce & lemon butter.
We all know that one crucial aspect to preparing prawns is cooking them for just the right amount of time. These grilled tiger prawns were cooked to perfection, sweet and succulent. The milho fritos and side salad accompanying the dish were also wonderful, although I could’ve done with a few more milho fritos…
Salted chocolate tart.
Wow, wow, wow. If there was ever a dish that represented ‘death by chocolate’ more aptly than this one, I would be sorely surprised! Every last bite of this dessert was pure indulgence.
Don’t be fooled, ladies and gents. This is not the elementary dessert that you first learned to make as a child. More like a banana split for adult foodies, this dessert comes complete with a caramelised banana seated on a bed of puff pastry, delicious sorbet and cherries. And trust me, these photos don’t do justice – it is even more beautiful in person. 😀
Fun facts about Mondiall:
- Did you know that Mondiall’s head chef, Stephen Mandes, was part of the team that won the third season of “The Ultimate Braaimaster”?
- Linking to the above, Chef Stephen has incorporated exciting grilling methods into the Mondiall menu, and the kitchen utilises two ceramic ‘green eggs’ to grill food on!
- Mondiall is actually owned by well-known restaurateur, Patrick Symington!
- As mentioned in my intro, Mondiall offers a private dining experience in a charming area upstairs. The private dining area is completely secluded from the other sections of the restaurant.
- On weekends, Mondiall offers a brunch menu and you can order your breakfast until 4pm! How cool is that?
- If you think that you won’t be able to afford Mondiall’s food, think again – Mondiall runs all sorts of foodie specials during each season. Phone the restaurant to enquire about them, or click here to take you directly to the page with their awesome specials! 😀
